Use deep, warm, and neutral colors that are masculine without being too dark or oppressive.
We’ve all seen the man-cave with the all-black walls. And while this strategy definitely makes a room more manly, the dark colors will often absorb all of the light and create a dim and gloomy space. To counter this effect, add in white or beige elements and natural lighting (featured above). Even better, try deep and rich colors instead of black (reds, browns, blues, and grays seem to work well). Our favorite grays? Behr Paint in Intellectual and Suede Grey (as seen on our How To Paint A Floor blog post).
We love the dark leather chair featured above, perfect for dad to sit on while he reads the morning paper. Throw in a few table lamps with warm, soft lighting, and you will have an atmosphere reminiscent of one of dad’s bear hugs. Also, don’t be too afraid of color: A bright burst of blue, orange, or red can read masculine while livening an otherwise dull space (featured below).
