FRIENDS OF THE KUOTES
You know why we love the internet? Because it brings us little gifts each and every day. Take, for example, this feature, of Stila Cosmetics creator Jeanine Lobell’s Manhattan home, which popped up on our Pinterest feed the other day. It was featured in Elle Decor way back in 2010, when we were still reading paper issues instead of scrolling through images on our iPad.
We seem to have missed this issue back in the day, so we were thrilled to be able to peruse the slideshow of images showing off Lobell’s rise to fame, and of course, of the design of her gorgeous Manhattan apartment home (which she shares with husband, actor Anthony Edwards).
Lobell, a “naturally gregarious”, fun-loving, colorful (literally) makeup artist who sent the beauty industry into a tizzy when she launched her own line, Stila, over 20 years ago, used to live in Los Angeles with her family. There, they did the typical Spanish-style home thing.
When they moved to Manhattan, however, everything changed. “We lived in a rambling Spanish-style house in L.A.,” says Lobell, “and serene shades seemed to suit it. But I wanted this place to reflect our current life, which is hardly quiet.”
Hardly quiet doesn’t seem to do the home justice. It’s a rainbow of bright colors, from a pop of lime on the kitchen cabinets to a master bedroom that’s all done in regal shades of purple. Though Lobell knows color, she enlisted the help of a designer when it came to decorating her home.
A kindred spirit was found in architect and designer Rafael de Cardenas, who, notably, was a former fashion and production designer who mostly worked wtih the creative crowd. In short, he was the perfect match for Lobell, someone who’s creative juices never seem to stop flowing.
When it came to choosing a color palette for the 5,000 square foot space (a full floor in a prewar building; Cardenas broke down the walls between two units to create the space), however, the designer deferred to the queen herself. “Jeanine is very exacting on the subject, as one might image-don’t call it lavender if it’s a lilac!” he jokes.
Lobell’s love for color was so all-encompassing, it seems, that at one point, the designer even recommended she exercise a bit of restraint – the opposite of the advice most designers give day to day. Restraint, however, isn’t Lobell’s thing. She and Edwards married in Reno on impulse.
Having sold Stila, Lobell has since dabbled in various ventures in the industry, including working as the Creative Director of Kevyn Aucoin Beauty and overseeing a cosmetics line for Opening Ceremony. As a makeup artist (who has worked with Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman, as well as done work for the Golden Globes red carpet), color is her thing, and it shows in her home.
