Coastal Interior Design: Sea Girt, NJ, Beach House Reveal

If you’ve been following us on Instagram, you’ll know that the Kathy Kuo Designs project I’m sharing on the blog today has been a long time in the making. We are SO excited to be revealing our Sea Girt, New Jersey coastal interior design with you. I have to say, this is one of our favorite projects to date! The goal of this project was to create a relaxing coastal getaway for a loving, growing family of seven.

From new homes to empty nests, our interior design team is here to help you love where you live.

From new homes to empty nests, our interior design team is here to help you love where you live.

The clients wanted their beautiful, two-story sea-facing home–which has tons of natural light–to capture their family memories and showcase their love for Sea Girt beach while remaining tasteful and fun. The result? A breezy, family-friendly beach house with a cohesive coastal look that incorporates classic American nuances, coastal furniture, nautical decor, an ocean-inspired palette, and fun, eclectic pieces that pull the designs and coastal inspired home decor motif together. The Family Room

Designing a home for a family of seven means providing lots of space to maneuver between furniture (i.e. lots of space for the kids to run around in their swimsuits or pajamas!). It was also important to provide numerous seating options so everyone in the family could come together in one living room space.

We started off with one of my all time favorite items on our site, the Cisco Brothers Seda Sofa, and we designed the rest of the room around this incredible ten-seater customizable sectional (It’s 8-way hand-tied and eco-friendly for the kids, of course!). This sectional is the perfect centerpiece for a coastal interior design with its slipcover upholstery, stylish silhouette, and…have we mentioned it’s INCREDIBLY comfortable?

To add some color and texture to the family room, we used natural materials and finishes. I especially love how the mango driftwood finish of the credenza reflects the sandy beaches right outside (coastal decorating doesn’t have to be heavy-handed to still be thematic). Since this is the first room family and guests walk into, we wanted to finish off the room with pops of color, so we added in blue and green hues through accessories like pillows, decor, and art.

The Office

The goal of any office design is to make the space as productive and functional as it is comfortable and beautiful. Therefore, we made sure to fit a full desk into this space complete with drawers and trays perfect for organization. With so much natural sunlight shimmering in through the window treatments of this coastal home, placing the desk right in front of the sunshine was an absolute must. The feminine and sophisticated look of our Oriana shagreen desk serves as the perfect hero piece, bringing a classic touch to the office while maintaining the coastal design style.

We painted the brick fireplace white to lighten the space. A custom lounge chair and ottoman was added next to create the ideal environment for reading or working on a laptop. And the pièce de résistance in the office is the wallpaper…talk about CUTE! We specified this elegant acanthus stripe pattern from Schumacher.

The Den

The den for this particular beach house project means family time. It’s the destination for watching a movie on the sofa or hosting a board game night. The multipurpose functionality requirements were this room’s biggest challenge. We solved this design challenge by defining a clear area for conversation and watching the television (featuring another stunning Cisco sofa and super-fun luxe bean bags for the comfiest lounging).

The built-ins with custom cushions and plentiful task lighting also provide a clean and sophisticated approach to storage. The best part of designing this room was creating the fun yet polished gallery wall of family photos. It’s a small detail that the client will be able to forever cherish!

The Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom is one of my favorite rooms in the entire Sea Girt home because it reflects the coastal interior design theme so nicely. I mean, there are custom bunk beds built in so visitors with young kids have a comfortable and convenient place to stay! Outside of this truly special detail, it’s also easy to get swept away by the room’s gorgeous coloration, from the natural handwoven cane of the Palecek bed to the custom upholstered chair and the celestial Anewall wallpaper. Talk about sleeping in the clouds!

The Bunk Bed Room

For a kids bedroom, it doesn’t get any cuter than these custom built-in twin bunks! Each bunk has their own individual sconce for late-night reading and shelving for toys and decor. This room screams, the coolest sleepover EVER! The shiplap panels, ship-printed bedding, and other beach-inspired decor play into a nautical theme. We love the bright color palette for a youthful, coastal bedroom.

Perfect for a coastal design style kids room! Check out the amazing 3D rendering we provided to our clients to visualize the space before buying!

The Pink Bedroom

Sometimes, girls just wanna have fun—don’t you think? We had so much fun creating this colorful wonderland of a young girl’s bedroom. We went all out with fun wallpaper and whimsical decor. Plus, the bedroom boasts a stunning built-in banquette with a custom curated mix-and-match pillow assortment.

Can you spy the subtle nods to the home’s coastal interior design theme? We discovered these beautiful fabrics from Schumacher with fish and coral motifs, and we just couldn’t resist!

The Master Bedroom

It’s lucky to have such a great space to work with when creating our coastal vision for the master bedroom. We centered this design around one of our favorite coastal style beds of all time, the solid oak Thomas Bina Otis Poster Bed. To soften the space, we wrapped the room in a textural wallpaper. Once again, we injected color and pattern into the design through the soft materials, like the bedding and the sophisticated koi fish print from Schumacher on our Ella rattan chair from Palecek.

The master bedroom was our client’s whimsical getaway and the process from the floor planning and design schematics, to 3D renderings and then the final photography, it was just beautiful. How realistic is this 3D rendering?
